THE INTERVIEW

Tell me a little bit about yourself, about your life? Where did you go to school, and what classes did you study? What helped prepare you to become the artist that you are today?

I was born in Rome, now I live in Milan...becouse the job situation about commercial animation is better.I studied achitecture at the university when i started working as free-lance animator for several animation studios, from this experience I earn a lot of informations that increases my skills. For me a big help was working with popular B-movie directors and talented animators like Bruno Corbucci, Carlo Vanzina and Manfredo Manfredi. A good experience, it was working with Dario Fo, a very funny guy...

How do you go about designing a character, and what goes through your mind, from start to end?

I think there's no formula.

What do you think really helps you out in designing a character?

Is very important to observ artists experience, the way like they draw and how they are capable to analyze and sintetyze in graphic the human and the animal features
Watching characters in live action movies and observing people in bublic places is also a good thing to do.

From your own experience and maybe from some people that you know, what should we put in our portfolio and what should we not?

For my experience I put in my portfolio the drawings that i like the most....I dont really care about the production's request. I suggesto not to use drawings that are not your own work!

What are some of the things that you have worked on?

I worked on several European Features, unfortunaltly most of them didn't have a distribution worldwide...so they are not so popular outside Europe..or Italy, for example "Dario Fo's:Johan Padan", "Three Wise Men", "Jester Till", "Timewalkers2: the adventure continues" and so on.

Is there a character design you have done that you are most proud of?

Yes, the characters for my own project, "Roscoe & Bosco" (it's a musical).

What are you working on now? (If you can tell us)

I' working on three commercials of a popular mineral water.
I did character design and I'm doing the animation...it's in a style very close to Kim Possible, as has been asked from the client.

Where is the place you would like to work if you had a choice?

Ministry of Treasure, of course.

Who do you think are the top character designers out there?

I love Alex Toth.

How do you go about coloring the character, what type of tools or media do you use?

Initially I used to work with Ecoline, but somebody told me that they are quite cancerous, becouse of this I've changed my mind and now I use Photoshop (smoking cuban cigars!...I'm joking, of course)

What part of designing a character is most fun and easy, and what is most hard?

There'no difference designing a character between the parts..that means that everything become easly to draw for me. For me drawing a character is a total creative process, everything has to goes together like one unique flow. Anyway, keep in mind that a very quick sketch is helpful to nail what is in your brain before it vanish.

What are some of your favorite character designs and least favorite, which you have seen?

Roger Ramjet is one of my fav...and, for sure, the whole bunch of Muppets.
What i dislike is the character design of the last CGI movie "The Wild".
They are not appealing, for me.

What is your most favorite subject to draw? And why?

Orpheuzs, my dog.

What inspired you to become an Artist?

Sorry, did you say "Artist"?

What are some of the neat things you have learned from other artists that you have worked with or seen?

Is important to be open minded and take anything is good for you.

What wisdom could you give us, about being an Artist? Do you have any tips you could give?

As they say:
"Follow your hart!"
...Actually it seems a good thing to say to a taxi driver when you catch a cab!

If people would like to contact you, how would you like to be contacted?

touchskies@libero.it

http://touchskieschronicles.blogspot.com/

Finally, do you have any of your art work for sale (sketchbook, prints, or anything) for people that like your work can know where and when to buy it?
